Serial number labels

Print serial numbers, asset tags and numbered stickers in order. Set the start number, add a barcode if you need one, and print on a sheet you pick.

How it works

  1. Paste your list, or skip it. Paste rows from Excel or Google Sheets to make one label per row. With no list, you can make labels just by choosing how many you want.
  2. Click "Numbered labels (tickets, serial numbers)". Set the start number, the number of labels, the digits and any text before or after the number. If you already pasted a list, the button says "Number the labels", and every row gets the next number.
  3. Choose a sheet and print. Pick a sheet such as Avery® 5167. Print a test page on plain paper first, then print on your label sheet at 100%.

What the numbering settings do

SettingWhat it does
Start atThe first number, such as 1 or 1001
How many numbersUp to 5,000
DigitsUse the number as it is, or 3 to 6 digits with leading zeros, such as 0001
Before the numberText such as "No. " or "SN-"
After the numberText that comes after the number
Labels with each number1 to 4. Use 2 for a ticket and a stub
Also as a codeNone, a Code 128 barcode, or a QR code

The number goes in a column called Number. Because it is a normal column, you can use it with colors, fonts and the AI helper, just like any other column.

Good uses for numbered labels

  • Asset and inventory tags. Put a number on each piece of equipment, then keep a list of what each number is.
  • Numbered stickers. Use them for lockers, bins, shelves and files.
  • Sample and specimen numbers. Give each sample its own number, and write the details in a spreadsheet.
  • Numbered boxes. Label boxes 001 to 040 when you pack or move.

Pick the sheet that fits your item:

Plan your numbers before you print

Decide three things first: the first number, the last number and the digits. A list from 1 to 200 needs 3 digits, so choose 001 to 200 if you want every number to match. If you already have a numbering system, such as the one your school or workshop uses, start there and keep it the same from one batch to the next.

LabelPeel makes the labels, but it does not track your items after that. Keep a simple spreadsheet with the number in one column and the item, location or owner in the others. When an item moves, update the spreadsheet, not just the sticker.

Ideas you can type

The AI helper changes every label at once. Try asking for:

  • "Number the labels from 1001 with 6 digits"
  • "Put SN- before each number and make a Code 128 barcode from it"
  • "Make a QR code from the Number column"
  • "Print the number in big bold letters"
  • "Make the labels where Status is Retired grey"

Tips

  • Test-scan every code. Scan one printed barcode or QR code before you print a full sheet.
  • Keep a matching list. A number alone does not say what the item is. Keep a spreadsheet with a row for each number.
  • Choose a tough label for equipment. Items that get handled or cleaned need a durable label. Check the sheet's material for your use.
  • Print a test page. Hold a test page against a label sheet before you use the real one. If the labels do not line up, read labels not lining up.
  • Use the same size for the same job. If you tag more than one kind of item, use one sheet size for each kind. Mixed sizes make the sheets harder to sort.

Questions

Can LabelPeel make numbered labels without a list?

Yes. Open Numbered labels, set how many numbers you want and where to start. It makes one label for each number, in order.

Can I put a barcode on each numbered label?

Yes. Under Also as a code, choose a Code 128 barcode or a QR code. Test-scan one printed label before you print the rest of the sheet.

Can I add a prefix like SN- before each number?

Yes. Type the text in Before the number. You can also choose 3 to 6 digits with leading zeros, such as 0001.

Which Avery® sheet is best for serial number labels?

Avery® 5167 gives you 80 small labels per sheet, which suits small equipment tags. Avery® 22806 is 2 inches square, which gives a QR code more room.
